On January 17, 2024, U.S. President Joe Biden will host high-ranking congressional leaders and politicians at the White House. The meeting will focus on requesting additional funding, including military assistance to Ukraine.
The President will bring together the leaders of the Senate and House of Representatives and the heads of key committees from both parties to discuss the “critical importance of his supplemental national security request.” Details of the meeting remain unknown, but the Biden administration is confident that the funding talks are moving in the right direction.
Key figures from both political parties, including Democratic leader Chuck Schumer and Republican leader Mitch McConnell, are expected to attend the meeting.
The meeting will occur against the backdrop of no progress in reaching an agreement in Congress to unlock additional funding to help Ukraine. According to reports, the key point of conflict is Mike Johnson’s position, which demands a stricter approach to curbing migration at the US-Mexico border than was agreed in the Senate.
As a reminder, on December 27 last year, the United States announced the last of a $250 million military aid package to Ukraine. The White House said that no money will be available for new military support for Ukraine until this issue is approved by Congress.
